The Pangasinan team — composed of about 90 young athletes –16 year old and below — captured 7 gold, 18 silver and 20 bronze medals at the end of the five-day competition.
Quezon City reigned champion with 29 gold, 22 silver and 19 bronze medals. Rounding out the top 10 were: Baguio City (22-18-10) 2nd; host province Negros Occidental (19-11-14) third; Cebu (16-19-19) fourth; IloIlo (13-0-4) fifth; Laguna (12-7-6), sixth; Zamboanga City (11-13-18) seventh; host City Bacolod (8-14-29), eight; and Manila (8-4-4), ninth.
In a post event meeting of team Pangasinan, delegation official Marlon Domalanta, on behalf of Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., congratulated the athletes, trainers and coaches for exerting best efforts to capture medals and elevate the ranking of Pangasinan from its ninth finish last year.
Gov. Espino had been elated to know that Pangasinense athletes displayed excellence in sporting events in the Batang Pinoy finals, but what is more important for us now is to assure the security and safety of our athletes on our way home, Domalanta said.
It is a good news that our team once again managed to be in top 10 despite the stiff competition, he said, adding that the Batang Pinoy national championships had opened opportunities for Pangasinense athletes, he added.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), organizer of Batang Pinoy, shortlisted five Pangasinense basketball athletes (Valerie Mae Mamaril, Trixie Alison Mamaril, Princess No-or; Loms Vincent Marinas and Mark Lester Castillo) along with athletes from other delegations who will be trained in the US under the Sports Visitors Program of the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational abd Cultural Affairs (ECA).
This evolved after the PSC and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas have taken notice of the performances of the Pangasinense athletes who bagged championship in Basketball 3/3 – girls and bronze placement in Basketball 3/3 – boys.
The nominees from Pangasinan are up for for stint at the Basketball Sports Visitors Program from March 11-24 in Washington DC and another city in US.
Some members of the champion volleyball team of Pangasinan — Jude Garcia, Ronnel Ballesteros, Aljon Batister, Rudolp Stephen Marinas, Jason Ducusin, Joel Natino David Niedo (Umingan NHS); Mac Razzel Decena (Bonuan Boquig NHS); Christian Mejia (Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades); and James Martin Natividad (Bani NHS) — could also avail of the same training opportunity, but will still be subjected to further screening from the PSC.
The team got its first gold medal as early as day one, January 29, courtesy of Mariz Sabado of Umingan NHS who competed in 2000m walk at the Panaad Stadium. Kim Xyros Macanas, also from the same school, landed second.
The Athletics team bagged a total of 12 medals (2-5-5).
Meanwhile, five cyclists from Pangasinan amazed spectators as they occupied first to fifth spots in the 30km criterium race held at the new Silay road heading to Silay airport on January 30, Thursday.
Executive Assistant IV Ramon Morden and Executive Assistant III Modesto Operania, delegation head, who visited the team from January 28-30 personally congratulated the cyclists and extended Gov. Espino’s congratulations to them during the awarding ceremonies.
The Karatedo team, composed mainly of athletes from Dagupan City-based private schools, romped of with 17 medals (2-8-7), giving Pangasinan team the most number of medals from kata and kumite categories of Karatedo.
Pangasinense arnisadors got one silver and three bronze medals while taekwondo athletes hauled in 2 silvers and one bronze.
Two bronze medals, on the other hand, were secured by the lawn tennis team in the boys and girls categories, respectively.
Lady FM Samantha Glo Revita from Rosales wrapped up the last silver medal of Pangasinan in the last day of competition.
